This paper introduces the CDL-PLC translator, a tool designed to convert building HVAC control sequences written in Control Description Language (CDL), a subset of Modelica currently standardizing under ASHRAE Standard 231P, into the IEC 61131-10 XML format. This translation is a crucial step in model-based design workflows, helping to digitalize the control delivery process in the building sector.
The study illustrates how CDL control logic can be implemented on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) standardized under IEC 61131, with practical validation and application examples.
Key insights:
🔹 The CDL-PLC translator enables automatic conversion of control sequences from CDL to IEC 61131-10 XML, bridging the gap between model-based design and actual implementation on PLCs.
🔹 The tool was validated by comparing a CDL block with its corresponding IEC block, ensuring reliable translation and functional equivalence.
🔹 A practical application demonstrates the translation of a control sequence for a hybrid heat pump plant in a case study neighborhood in Belgium.
🔹 The work supports digitalization of building industry processes, reducing manual effort and potential errors in control implementation.
🔹 Future developments will expand the tool’s applicability, helping to standardize and streamline HVAC control deployment in complex building projects.
