The Belgian pilot sites of the SEEDS project continue to make strong progress, demonstrating the real-life implementation of innovative solutions for smarter, more efficient and more sustainable heating and cooling systems.

In the Stijn Streuvels neighbourhood, the renovation is nearing completion. The building envelope has been refurbished, individual technical systems have been installed in the homes, and the piping connecting each house to the central technical room is now in place. Interior finishing is currently underway, while the next steps will focus on landscaping the central courtyard and completing the fit-out of the central technical room.

This technical room will host a central geothermal heat pump, which will play a key role in the district heating network. Combined with smart control strategies, this solution helps optimise energy performance while contributing to lower investment costs.

In the neighbouring de Schipjes district, the upgrade of the existing central systems is also close to completion. This system has already been providing comfort to residents for over a year. It combines ground-source heat with support from air-to-water heat pumps and is managed through smart MPC control.

These developments highlight the important role of SEEDS pilot sites in supporting the transition towards more energy-efficient, intelligent and renewable-based buildings. By testing these solutions in real-life conditions, the project contributes to accelerating the decarbonisation of the building sector across Europe.
