What is SEEDS?
SEEDS stands for “cost-effective and replicable RES-integrated electrified heating and cooling systems for improved energy efficiency and demand response“.
The project brings together a large European consortium of researchers, companies, cities and technology providers to accelerate the electrification of heating and cooling in buildings , one of the biggest challenges for Europe’s energy transition.
Heating and cooling account for a major share of Europe’s energy consumption and carbon emissions. SEEDS addresses this challenge by demonstrating innovative, renewable-based and smart electrification solutions that are efficient, flexible and ready to be replicated across Europe.
What does SEEDS aim to achieve?
SEEDS aims to make the transition to clean heating and cooling simpler, more affordable and scalable.
The project focuses on:
- Integrating heat pumps, renewable energy sources and thermal storage into building energy systems
- Improving energy efficiency and comfort through smart control and optimisation
- Enabling buildings to actively support the electricity grid through energy flexibility and demand response
- Reducing costs and risks for building owners, designers and decision makers
- Supporting replication and market uptake of electrified solutions across different building types and climates
How does SEEDS work?
SEEDS develops and tests its solutions in real-life conditions.
The project:
- Demonstrates advanced electrified heating and cooling systems in 6 pilot sites and one follower site across Europe
- Covers a wide range of climate zones, building types and national contexts
- Combines technical innovation with digital tools, business models and decision-support frameworks
- Engages stakeholders throughout the value chain, from technology providers to cities, building owners and end users
SEEDS ensures that solutions are not only innovative, but also practical, replicable, and market-ready.
Why SEEDS matters?
SEEDS contributes directly to European climate and energy goals by:
- Supporting the decarbonisation of buildings
- Reducing reliance on fossil fuels for heating and cooling
- Strengthening the role of buildings in a flexible and resilient energy system
- Contributing to initiatives such as REPowerEU and the EU’s long-term climate neutrality objectives
Ultimately, SEEDS helps pave the way for a future where buildings are energy-efficient, electrified, smart and renewable-ready.
“We are excited to coordinate this ambitious project which combines the expertise of partners from 8 European countries representing 5 local value chains with a strong background in design, construction and optimal operation of RES-based heating and cooling systems. We will demonstrate grid services by activating energy flexibility of these systems and accelerate the decarbonization of energy use in buildings with SEEDS project solutions, which are beyond the physical boundaries of buildings.”
